The absorption of Halofantrine - Halfan is erratic but increases
when taken with fatty food. Due to the fear of toxicity of its
excess use without prescription, which are only advisable for
adults. An Increased volume of halofantrine causes a rise in blood
levels leading to blood pressure that can be severe. Plasma levels
peak at 16 hours and the half-life of the drug is about 4 days. The
consumption of Halofantrine - Halfan is exclusively for the
treatment of malaria. The drug cannot prevent malaria (prophylaxis)
because of the risk of toxicity and unreliable absorption.
Halofantrine can cause abdominal pain, diarrhea, vomiting, rash,
headache, itching and elevated liver enzymes. The most dangerous
side effect is cardiac arrhythmias, which causes significant QT
prolongation. This effect is even noticeable at standard doses. The
drug is a strong content for elimination to patients suffering with
cardiac conduction defects, which is consumable along with
mefloquine. Any drug having side effects does not mean that all may
suffer it.
Medicines consumed under the supervision of the doctors in a proper
manner may help to avoid the side effects. Other severe side effects
of this drug are erectile dysfunction, removal of proteins in the
urine and glycosuria. Some moderate side effects include insomnia,
which is related to difficulty in sleeping, dizziness, sweating. The
combination of Halofantrine - Halfan with sulphonylurea may lead to
low blood glucose level known as hypoglycemia. Halofantrine - Halfan
is exclusively a drug for the treatment of malaria where the dose
increases to 500mg in adults during severe stages.
